The Relationship Between Pattern and Product Shape

A technical guide to the relationship between pattern and product shape, covering selection, use, sampling and production decisions in manufacturing processes.

Purpose of the process

The pattern determines the product’s basic geometry, while material thickness and elasticity affect how that geometry becomes the actual garment. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the target style, material and application method.

In the production flow, every step affects the accuracy of the next operation. If pattern, material and measurement information are not clear at the outset, adjustments made during cutting or pressing may create differences between products. Therefore, decisions are fixed through a verifiable sample and technical information rather than verbal descriptions. The relationship between pattern and product shape should be assessed separately.

Points to consider in practice

Inspection is not left solely to the finished component. In-process checks at material receipt, marker making, cutting or after moulding prevent errors from increasing. The approved physical sample, measurement chart and product description must define the same result; changes are recorded before production begins. Criteria for the relationship between pattern and product shape are determined before sampling.

When addressing the relationship between pattern and product shape in the sample room, it is useful to set aside a small test piece from the shell fabric. The intermediate component is applied to this piece, after which the effects of sewing and pressing are observed. This prevents differing interpretations by the production team regarding stiffness, thickness or shape.

Inspection and approval

The relationship between pattern and product shape requires the sample room, cutting and sewing teams to use the same technical definition. When measurements or materials change, their effect on product shape should be reviewed again. A brief sample check makes it possible to identify potential inconsistencies earlier, before production begins.

Approval concerning the relationship between pattern and product shape should be communicated with the same content to purchasing and production teams. Even where product names are similar, there may be differences in measurement, direction or application. The criteria used for the initial approval must also not be changed when checking samples before packing and dispatch.

The result of testing conducted for the relationship between pattern and product shape should be recorded in brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” the fabric, pattern and application direction for which approval was given should be documented. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong product or a different application in repeat orders.
