How is a shoulder pad sample prepared?

Technical guide to preparing shoulder pad samples, covering selection, use, sampling and production decisions with a focus on shoulder pad models.

Function on the pattern

A shoulder pad sample is prepared to test dimension and material decisions after reviewing the garment pattern and intended use. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the intended style, material and application method.

A shoulder-pad decision is not made by looking at the product name alone. The shoulder slope, armhole, drape of the shell fabric and the volume required by the design should be seen together on the same sample. Excessively firm support may show through a lightweight fabric, while insufficient structure in heavy outerwear may cause the shoulder line to drop. These factors should be assessed separately when preparing a shoulder pad sample.

Points that determine selection

During inspection, check the shoulder pad’s placement at the shoulder point, symmetry between both sides, transition to the sleeve head, and whether it leaves an impression under the fabric. The component should be applied without being stretched or changing direction during sewing. If the style changes, the previous shoulder pad should not automatically be assumed suitable. Criteria for preparing a shoulder pad sample should be set before sampling.

During an order discussion, giving only the style name for a shoulder pad sample may be insufficient. For the technical team, the location of use, shell fabric, pattern information and expected result are more descriptive. If an existing sample is available, the ways in which the new development will be the same or different should also be stated.

How should it be checked on a sample?

Before ordering a shoulder pad sample, a clear technical specification should be prepared. The end use, pattern, shell fabric and expected shape are shared, while unclear points are tested on the sample. Using the same reference throughout bulk production after approval reduces differences in interpretation between teams.

If the pattern or shell fabric changes after the shoulder pad sample decision has been approved, the previous result should not be considered valid. A seemingly small difference in fabric thickness or stretch may alter the appearance of the supporting component. The change should be reviewed again through a brief application sample before bulk production.

The outcome of testing a shoulder pad sample should be recorded with brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” record the fabric, pattern and application direction for which approval was given. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong component or a different application method for repeat orders.
