What Types of Shoulder Pads Are Available?

A technical guide to shoulder pad types, covering selection, use, sampling and production decisions for garment shoulder pad models.

Its role in the pattern

Shoulder pads are classified by shape, thickness, outer covering, filling structure and the garment type in which they will be used. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the target style, material and application method.

A shoulder-pad decision is not made by product name alone. Shoulder slope, armhole, drape of the shell fabric and the volume required by the design should all be reviewed on the same sample. Excessively firm support may show through a lightweight fabric, while insufficient structure in heavy outerwear may cause the shoulder line to drop. Shoulder pad types should be assessed separately.

Key factors determining selection

During inspection, check the pad's placement at the shoulder point, symmetry on both sides, transition into the sleeve head, and whether it creates marks under the fabric. The component should be applied without being pulled or reversed during sewing. If the style changes, the previously used pad should not automatically be assumed suitable. Criteria for shoulder pad types are determined before sampling.

When considering shoulder pad types in the sample room, it is useful to set aside a small test piece of the shell fabric. The interlining component is applied to this piece, after which the effects of sewing and pressing are reviewed. This helps prevent differing interpretations by the production team regarding firmness, thickness or shape.

How is it checked on a sample?

The subject of shoulder pad types requires pattern, cutting and sewing teams to use the same technical definition. When dimensions or material change, their effect on garment shape should be reviewed again. A short sample check helps identify incompatibilities that may arise after production begins at an earlier stage.

Approval related to shoulder pad types should be communicated with the same content to purchasing and production teams. Even if product names are similar, there may be differences in dimensions, direction or application. The criteria used for the initial approval should also not be changed during packaging and pre-dispatch sample checks.

The result of the trial for shoulder pad types should be recorded with brief, measurable notes. Instead of a general statement such as “suitable,” record the fabric, pattern and application direction for which approval was given. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong component or a different application method for repeat orders.
