Where is paper-like interfacing used?

A technical guide to the uses of paper-like interfacing, including selection, sampling and production decisions for textile support materials and garments.

Assessment with the fabric

Paper-like interfacing is used in components requiring support during pattern making and sewing after its compatibility with the fabric has been tested. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the intended style, material and application method.

Interfacing is not selected independently of the shell fabric. The fabric's fibre structure, surface sensitivity, direction of stretch and the area of the garment where it will be used are part of the decision. Especially in fusible applications, heat, time and pressure settings should first be tested on a small piece; the handle should be checked as well as the appearance. Uses of paper-like interfacing should be assessed separately.

Application decisions

After the test piece has cooled, the surface, edges, handle and bond should be checked together. If bubbling, stiffening, colour change or separation occurs, do not simply increase the heat; reassess interfacing-fabric compatibility and application conditions from the start. The approved test should be retained as a reference before bulk cutting. Criteria for uses of paper-like interfacing are determined before sampling.

During an order discussion, providing only the style name for the uses of paper-like interfacing may be insufficient. For the technical team, the application area, shell fabric, pattern information and expected result are more informative. Where an existing sample is available, the ways in which the new work will be the same or different should also be stated.

Testing and control

A clear technical specification should be prepared before ordering for uses of paper-like interfacing. The application area, pattern, shell fabric and expected shape are shared, while unclear points are tested on the sample. After approval, using the same reference throughout bulk production reduces differences in interpretation between teams.

If the pattern or shell fabric changes after a decision on uses of paper-like interfacing has been approved, the previous result should not be considered valid. A seemingly small difference in fabric thickness or stretch can change the drape of the support material. The change should be reviewed again through a short application sample before bulk production.

The result of testing for uses of paper-like interfacing should be recorded in brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” record which fabric, which pattern and which application direction were approved. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong product or a different application for repeat orders.
