What Is an Unpadded Moulded Cup?

A technical guide to unpadded moulded cups, covering selection, use, sampling and production decisions for bra cup and moulded cup models.

Relationship between shape and use

An unpadded moulded cup has no additional padding layer and takes its shape from the basic cup construction. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the intended style, material and application method.

A size label alone is not sufficient when selecting cups and moulded cups. The breast base, cup depth, upper-edge opening, outer-fabric stretch and garment construction must be considered together. The same size name may not produce the same fit in different patterns; testing on the actual style is therefore necessary. This must be assessed separately for “What is an unpadded moulded cup?”

Points to consider when selecting a model

On the sample, the cup base line is compared with the pattern; the upper edge is checked for gaping, distortion or tension in the outer fabric. The right and left pieces must have the same shape and must not be crushed during storage or sewing. A change of fabric or pattern may require the cup selection to be retested. Criteria for an unpadded moulded cup are determined before sampling.

When considering an unpadded moulded cup in the sample room, it is useful to set aside a small trial piece of the main fabric. The intermediate component is applied to this piece, then the effects of sewing and pressing are observed. This helps prevent different interpretations by the production team regarding stiffness, thickness or shape.

From sample to bulk production

A clear technical specification should be prepared before ordering an unpadded moulded cup. The end use, pattern, main fabric and expected shape are shared, while unclear points are tested on the sample. Using the same reference throughout bulk production after approval reduces differences in interpretation between teams.

If the pattern or main fabric changes after the unpadded moulded cup decision has been approved, the previous result should not be considered valid. A seemingly small difference in fabric thickness or stretch may alter the appearance of the intermediate component. The change should be reviewed again through a short application sample before bulk production.

The result of testing for an unpadded moulded cup should be recorded in brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” the fabric, pattern and application direction for which approval was given should be stated. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong product or a different application for repeat orders.
