Difference between woven and knitted interfacing

A technical guide to the difference between woven and knitted interfacing, including selection, sampling and production decisions for garment support materials.

Assessment with the fabric

Woven interfacing offers a structure with a distinct yarn direction, while knitted interfacing may provide more flexible behaviour. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the intended style, material and application method.

Interfacing is not selected independently of the shell fabric. The fabric's fibre structure, surface sensitivity, direction of stretch and the area of the garment where it will be used are part of the decision. Especially in fusible applications, heat, time and pressure settings should first be tested on a small piece; the handle should be checked as well as the appearance. The difference between woven and knitted interfacing should be assessed separately.

Application decisions

After the test piece has cooled, the surface, edges, handle and bond should be checked together. If bubbling, stiffening, colour change or separation occurs, do not simply increase the heat; reassess interfacing-fabric compatibility and application conditions from the start. The approved test should be retained as a reference before bulk cutting. Criteria for the difference between woven and knitted interfacing are determined before sampling.

During an order discussion, providing only the style name for the difference between woven and knitted interfacing may be insufficient. For the technical team, the application area, shell fabric, pattern information and expected result are more informative. Where an existing sample is available, the ways in which the new work will be the same or different should also be stated.

Testing and control

The subject of the difference between woven and knitted interfacing requires the pattern-making, cutting and sewing teams to use the same technical definition. When the measurement or material changes, its effect on garment shape should be reviewed again. A brief sample inspection helps identify incompatibilities that may arise after production begins at an earlier stage.

Approval related to the difference between woven and knitted interfacing should be communicated with the same content to purchasing and production teams. Even where product names are similar, there may be differences in measurements, direction or application. The criteria used for the initial approval should also not be changed during sample checks before packing and dispatch.

The result of testing for the difference between woven and knitted interfacing should be recorded in brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” record which fabric, which pattern and which application direction were approved. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong product or a different application for repeat orders.
