Assessment with the fabric
Interfacing is an auxiliary textile material used to provide shape, strength or seam support to specific areas of a fabric. This definition explains not only the appearance of the component but also its function within the garment. Suitability should be assessed according to the intended style, material and application method.
Interfacing is not selected independently of the shell fabric. The fabric's fibre structure, surface sensitivity, direction of stretch and the area of the garment where it will be used are part of the decision. Especially in fusible applications, heat, time and pressure settings should first be tested on a small piece; the handle should be checked as well as the appearance. What is interfacing should be assessed separately.
Application decisions
After the test piece has cooled, the surface, edges, handle and bond should be checked together. If bubbling, stiffening, colour change or separation occurs, do not simply increase the heat; reassess interfacing-fabric compatibility and application conditions from the start. The approved test should be retained as a reference before bulk cutting. Criteria for what is interfacing are determined before sampling.
When assessing what is interfacing, the expected result in the finished garment should first be defined in writing. State whether the component is intended to be visible or only to provide internal support, and specify the fabric and pattern to be used. When taking measurements on the sample, do not assess only the appearance on a flat table; examine the sewn garment as well.
Testing and control
The correct answer to “What is interfacing?” cannot be given as a single product name without seeing the style to be used. At the initial assessment, the application area and expected appearance are defined, then suitable options are compared on the actual fabric and pattern. This ensures that the bulk-production decision is based on an approved component rather than assumption.
Keeping only a photograph of the approved component is not sufficient. For what is interfacing, subsequent production proceeds more clearly when a physical sample, product description and relevant measurements are retained together. If a correction is made later on the sample, it should also be checked that this has been incorporated into the production reference.
The result of testing for what is interfacing should be recorded in brief, measurable notes. Rather than a general statement such as “suitable,” record which fabric, which pattern and which application direction were approved. This record reduces the risk of selecting the wrong product or a different application for repeat orders.
